This series of work, tentatively called "The Sense" is based on imagery commonly invoked in discussions about recent discoveries in brain science.

The portraits above are back lit with one single LED light, animating the very sparse portraits with an idea that vivid activity may lie below their minimal surfaces.

The Valley (above) is based on the science indicating that the brain physically changes with the events that affect it, and as it does so memories are formed, as well as expectations of future events.

This process allows for random events as well as training and controlled thinking, further impacting the development of the organ. This model, The Valley, therefor is a construction site as well as a natural formation.

tear machine

Tears2; 2006; 16"x14"; glass, peristaltic pump, halogen spot source, soapy water, plexi mirror, wood frame, acrylic armature.

Soapy water is pumped onto a small sheet of glass, while a bright light shines onto the viewer: "tears" appear on the viewer's face. For many this experience causes a strong empathy response.
